On Halloween night, October 31, 2008, a quiet email arrived in a cryptography research mailing list. The sender: Satoshi Nakamoto. The attached 9-page PDF changed the history of finance.
The timing is no coincidence. It was just 49 days after the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers, the 4th-largest US investment bank. Right as the global financial system was seen collapsing, someone published the blueprint for a monetary system that needs no central authority.
Whether this name is one person or many β no one still knows. But what matters is that the system Satoshi created has run for 15 years without stopping once β with no founder.
What matters is not who Satoshi is.
The Bitcoin network hasn't stopped once since January 3, 2009. No CEO, no headquarters, no board of directors. Rules written in code operate on their own. Satoshi disappeared β but Bitcoin continues.
